DC Women Kicking Ass

Thoughts, pictures, reviews and other stuff about the women of DC Comics, and occasionally Marvel and other places, who kick ass. Comic Blog Elite "... just a dreadful little site that just basically compiles lists."

localairwaves asked:

In a time where DC doesn't even allow some of their writers to write, like Rozum on Static Shock, what is the incentive to even want to read/write for DC, especially if you're not white, male, or straight? Why are comics increasingly written by editorial instead of those who collect paychecks for doing said job? (Loaded questions, I know, but basically: are you upset over the Static news, and why does this kind of stuff happen?)

Why? Because DC and Marvel are like 3/4 or more of the market meaning that they have the most potential for making money. I am not saying money is the only driver but for a lot of writers of comics Marvel and DC are the show, whether you white or a PoC, male or female or whether you are straight or queer.

Why is editorial more involved? Depends. Sometimes you just have editors who can’t be hands off. Sometimes you have editorial pushing an agenda or particular feel (NO SIDEKICKS, NO HUMOR, NO STREETLEVEL VILLAINS!) or you have folks who are just repeating what they did when they were successful once hoping they will be again. But you also have so very good editors who see talent and mold it like clay. Or realized they have a smart talented writer and let them shine. It’s like any business, you have good managers and you have ones that aren’t good.

And I think the post I did yesterday on Static was pretty clear that I’m not happy. But not surprised either.
