Well that didn’t take long. Director James Gunn, tapped to make Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy apologized tonight for writing a post which criticized by many, including myself, for being sexist and homophobic. The post which was written two years ago received wide spread attention two days ago.
Gunn no doubt realized that he was going to have to do something when the Human Rights Campaign, one the largest Gay rights groups, condemned the post today. Gunn posted the following on his Facebook page and provided to GLAAD
A couple of years ago I wrote a blog that was meant to be satirical and funny. In rereading it over the past day I don’t think it’s funny. The attempted humor in the blog does not represent my actual feelings. However, I can see where statements were poorly worded and offensive to many. I’m sorry and regret making them at all.
People who are familiar with me as evidenced by my Facebook page and other mediums know that I’m an outspoken proponent for the rights of the gay and lesbian community, women and anyone who feels disenfranchised, and it kills me that some other outsider like myself, despite his or her gender or sexuality, might feel hurt or attacked by something I said. We’re all in the same camp, and I want to do my best to make this world a better place for all of us. I’m learning all the time. I promise to be more careful with my words in the future. And I will do my best to be funnier as well. Much love to all - James
So he really thought that the post was satirical and funny? And what changed to make him think it isn’t funny now except the internet and a Gay rights group breathing down his neck? Oh well, at least he avoided the “I’m sorry you’re upset” apology. And perhaps he will indeed be “more careful” in the future.
So now he can go back to making his movie for Disney. Because God forbid the world should be denied that.
Yeah, I’m a bit cynical. I’ve spent the evening debating this with two industry folks. And it was a mind boggling reminder about how male privilege goggles are so pervasive. And how people think that if you say homophobic shit about fictional characters it’s not the same as saying it about real people. Seriously.
Not only that, but if...he thinks of women,...female...
Yeah, no, this just proves...he’s smart enough...avoid fire...
Good to know there are other people who aren’t buying this apology so easily.
