Thoughts, pictures, reviews and other stuff about the women of DC Comics, and occasionally Marvel and other places, who kick ass. Comic Blog Elite "... just a dreadful little site that just basically compiles lists."

“Superhero Diaries: Black Canary” from Craveonline - It’s supposed to funny!

I read all the comics sites on a regular basis but I tend to forget about CraveOnline. And then one day I’ll remember it and pop on there for a look. And today I found this. It is purportedly Black Canary’s diary recounting the plots of Birds of Prey issues 1 and 2. Excuse me, WTF? Written by Zach Oberman, I think it is supposed to be funny and a parody of how women talk about their friends. You know, how we call each other “bitches” and “slutty looking”,  and how we passively aggressively compliment them on their weight and clothes. Oh and, of course, describe them in terms of the characters on “Sex in the City”:

So yeah, Oracle called me to meet up tonight.  She said all the girls would be here: Huntress (the “Miranda” of the group - a bitch, but we love her), Lady Blackhawk (our “Samantha”, and you guys reading this probably know why!), Oracle (SUCH a “Charlotte”) and me.  I know every girl thinks she’s like Carrie, but I’m not even exaggerating. And it’s not just because I heart Manolos.

And it goes on. Canary is portrayed as an airhead. Here is “she” is talking about the names of the team:

I will say this, though: the way their bird names fit with the team name? ADORABLE.  Now we need to come up with bird names for Oracle and Huntress.  From the way she desperately displays her goodies for the attention of the opposite sex, Huntress should definitely be Peacock.  (I kid ‘cause I love, H!  Though seriously, I’m watching you flirt with Hawk right now and it’s gross.  Keep it in your pants.)  But what about Oracle?  What bird is really smart? Legless birds could work too. Please send suggestions to fightinginfishnets@hotmail.com.

Uh, no. I think I have a pretty good sense of humor and I am not above enjoying good parody. But this isn’t very funny, uses demeaning language and, frankly, I am a little surprised it got by the editor. The person writing it claims to know about comics, but doesn’t seem to be aware that Ed Benes drew about 30+ issues of BoP’s original run.

Too bad. A good Birds of Prey parody would be funny. Gail Simone did one that consisted of one line in her old YABS column that I found smarter that the entire CraveOnline piece:

                                    Birds of Prey
                                  by Gail Simone
Black Canary: Does this outfit make my ass look empowered?

Sigh. I know, I’m complaining again. What do you think?
