DC Women Kicking Ass

Thoughts, pictures, reviews and other stuff about the women in comics who kick ass. This is a feminist site. Deal with it.
"... just a dreadful little site that just basically compiles lists." - poster/DC Comics forum
"... provides a much-needed voice that is not often heard on traditional comic sites." - Wired's Geek Dad
... she's pretty amazingly ignorant of comics outside of the Batverse and some recent Wonder Woman, and seems pretty clueless about the way the industry works. That and she doesn't write that well at all." anonymous poster, Dreamwidth
" ... a phenomenal blog that's always up to date with female superhero news ..." -Nerdbastards.com

May the Fourth be With You with LOTS of Comic Artist Drawing Leia!

It’s time to celebrate Star Wars! This week we got a look at the cast of new Star Wars movie and it was pretty surprising when the released the first look at the Abrams/Disney sequel cast that even in a galaxy that isn’t quite as long, long time ago as the first Star Wars movie there is still only room for mostly white guys.

I know, I know - they probably will add another woman and or a person of color to the cast and, as was suggested, we stop whining about it.

I’d like to note at this time that the person who took me to see Star Wars for the first time was my grandmother. And that was because SHE wanted to see it. Hollywood? As far as the female audience? Get. Your. Shit. Together.

Anyway let’s celebrate the fourth with Princess Leia drawn by a comic book artists!

New Book on Cliff Chiang and The Wonder Woman You Almost Had From Him and Azzarello

You may know that Cliff Chiang is one of my favorite comic artists. I love his bold graphic style and his ability to capture the personality of a character in a look, a wink or the way they hold their body. He also manages to draw women that are sexy but never objectified. He is also one of the few artists that draws clothing for characters that I’d actually like to wear.

Chiang is the focus of a new book from the TwoMorrows publishing and if you are also a fan of Chiang or the artist’s process I highly recommend it. You can buy a copy here.

In an a long form interview with Chris Arrant, the book provides an overview of Chiang’s career from student/intern at Marvel to editorial assistant at Vertigo to his emergence as an artist at DC Comics. For those who want to work in comics, it provides a valuable overview of the difficulties of breaking into the comic business.

The book also covers Chiang’s reboot of Wonder Woman with Brian Azzarello including the approach the two had originally planned for the character.

Happy Birthday Cliff Chiang!

Today is the birthday of one of my favorite comic artists - Cliff Chiang. I’m lucky to own two pieces by him.

Wonder Woman, of course

image

And a combo Batgirl and Oracle.

image

I’ve met Cliff a few times and he always a joy to speak with. So let’s all wish him a happy day and let’s revel in some of his other wonderful portraits of DC women.

image

Canary!

image

Birds of Prey!

image

Babs as Prince! (I’ve got an autographed one of these)

image

Supergirl!

Poison Ivy (fixed!)

image

Fire!

One of things I appreciate about Cliff is ability to dress women realistically and wearing clothing from the current decade:

image

Here are Barbara Gordon, Zatanna and Wonder Woman out for a night on the town.

Zatanna on a couch. I have those boots.

Wonder Woman out for the night.

And finally maybe my favorite Chiang piece:

Cover and Solicit for Wonder Woman #20

Another fantastic cover by Cliff Chiang.

Wonder Woman was certain there was one person in her life she could trust—but she thought wrong!

Well, you’d think this would be Superman given their incredible romantic connection. But it is probably Zola.

Artist schedule for Wonder Woman

As some of you may have noticed the solicit for Wonder Woman #10 did not include Cliff Chiang on interiors. Chiang just clarified the schedule for the book:

So Chiang is on March and April. Tony Akins returns for May and June and Cliff is back for July, August and September. Imreally glad to see that he’ll be on the book after #12 and into a second year.

I missed Cliff’s birthday yesterday, but I’m still going to celebrate. How much do I love Cliff Chiang. MUCH! Let’s start with one of my prized possessions, my very own Chiang.

And let’s revel in some of Cliff’s other wonderful portraits of DC women.

A wonderful piece for a wonderful cause by a wonderful artist.

Here’s a page of unused pencils from Wonder Woman #1. Though it gives us a good shot of the new costume and Diana’s stature, it clearly lacked the drama and presence we needed for the scene so we went with a much tighter closeup. I still like the contrasting body language here.
Go to More Fun Comics & Games in Denton, TX for a chance to win this page of original art!

Unused page from Wonder Woman by Cliff Chiang. I LOVE how tall she looks. (Also that the boots are flat but I don’t think that is the final look).

Preview of Wonder Woman #1

Here are four pages from Wonder Woman #1. Who is buying this tomorrow? I know I am.

Apollo from Wonder Woman #1

Another piece of lovely Cliff Chiang art from Wonder Woman. This one is of Apollo. Someone asked if he based him on a popular pop singer. Well, we know Chiang loves to combine comics and pop music so did he?

Okay I can see it a little but I’m really thinking more Seal in “Kiss from a Rose”

Artwork of Centaurs from Wonder Woman #1

DC just tweeted this out:

Here are the centaurs Wonder Woman tangles with in first issue. Just WAIT to see how a centaur gets made

That hair is reminding me of Storm’s mohawk.

Wonder Woman by Cliff Chiang

What’s this? Haven’t seen this before. Looks like a variant to #1? Or is it the cover to #4Kinda of. Actually, according to Cliff Chiang, it’s an internal promo image/inventory cover.

Another page from Wonder Woman #2

Oh, Mr. Chiang, you are so good. That look on Diana’s face? More personality than I’ve seen her have in comics in, oh, about 15 months. More pages popping up this week on USA Today.
