It’s down to just two couples! Lots of you had questions about what made a couple canon or non-canon in the tournament and I’ve answered them a few times but what better time to clarify than the finals? The rule was if a couple appeared in both the DCAU and DCU their status in the DCU took precedence. Hope that helps!
Anyway on to the two finalist couples where the subtext and text are barely distinguishable.

Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy
vs.

Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, Oracle and Dinah Lance/Black Canary
Voting is open until 8:30 EST. One vote per person, please.
Renee Montoya and Helena Bertinelli won yesterday’s match. That leaves just four couples in the semi-finals and today they will battle to decide who goes to Thursday’s final.
And here are the two matches:

Ted Kord/Blue Beetle and Michael Carter/Booster Gold
vs

and Match 2

Barbara Gordon and Dinah Lance
vs.

Renee Montoya/The Question and Helena Bertinelli/Huntress
Voting is open until 8:30 PM EST.
One vote per person please.
The winner of the previous non-canon tournament was Blue Beetle and Booster Gold.
Today’s match is:

Barbara Gordon and Dinah Lance!
vs.

Huntress and Power Girl!
Voting closes at 8:30 PM EST
Golden Age Birds of Prey. For the DC Fifty Too blog project
This is wonderful! It reminds me a bit of the never published Birds of Prey newspaper comic by Chuck Dixon.
I like when Dinah rides her motorcycle so today, since I’ll be busy, I will be providing you with many images of Black Canary on her bike. Canary’s been riding a motorcycle for years. She rode it when she went traveling with Hal and Ollie, she’s ridden it in the DCAU and most recently she’s been on it in Green Arrow/Black Canary. I hope it turns up in this volume of BoP. So let’s go!

One is a technology geek — smart and controlling and rarely caught with her emotional guard down. Prickly, you could say. The other is technology phobic, a nurturer who wears her heart on her sleeve. A pleaser, you could say. Both broken and repaired, one by shear will, the other by a helping hand when all else was gone. In the case of Barbara Gordon and Dinah Lance, it really is a case of opposites attracting. Some see nothing but friendship. But if you read between the lines, there is so much more there. Little things, really. The way Dinah focuses all her energy on Babs when they are together in a room. How Babs seems looser when Dinah’s around. How Dinah watches over Barbara telling her to eat and to sleep when she’s working too hard. How Barbara encourages Dinah’s confidence in herself. And how of everyone in her life, Dinah’s the one Babs will want to open up to and turn when things turn dark.
Some prefer Dinah with Ollie and Babs with Dick. And certainly those pairs have had their moments. But when you read BoP and see Dinah and Babs together there is, to me, another level of connection. Will it ever become canon? You never know. Until then there’s the subtext, the fan fiction and the art, and the videos.

Fyeahbatgirls has just reminded me that today is International Femslash Day. Go check out their Tumblr for lots of pairings. I’ll simply provide this panel from Butch Guice and Chuck Dixon.
Some quick teamwork in Birds of Prey 28.
This is from the issue in which Babs and Dinah first spend time together face-to-to-face following the “call me Barbara” moment in issue 21. Dinah visits the Clocktower and Babs tells her that she’s the former Batgirl. That’s why Dinah calls her that in the last panel above. They are just adorable together. I think Butch Guice drew a beautiful Dinah and Babs. One of my favorite issues.
Wow, that great Babs/Dinah spam means it’s time for a slassherific Babs/Dinah video!
The other day in honor of Father’s Day I posted about bad dads who need to get their ass kicked. Today I’m highlighting five “dads” who deserve some love and hugs.

Pat Dugan, step-dad to Courtney Whitmore/Stargirl. Pat Dugan was, Stripsey, the sidekick to Star-Spangled Kid during WW II. When his step-daughter Courtney Whitmore decided to fight crime as the new Star-Spangled Kid, Pat once again became Stripsey accompanying the teenage girl on her adventures. That suit is hot and isn’t Pat old? What a dad.

Ted Grant and the JSA, surrogate dads to Dinah Laurel Lance. Dinah had a dad, Larry Lance, but she also “uncles” that served with her Mom in the JSA. Ted Grant, Wildcat, still serves as a father figure for Dinah. He trained her as a child, has gone on missions with her to provide back-up and held her hand when Dinah’s partner, Barbara Gordon, laid in the hospital fighting for her life. I wish we could see some more “Uncle Ted” and Dinah time on panel.

Black Lighting, dad of Thunder and Lighting. Jefferson Pierce has been doubly blessed with two daughters who wanted to follow him into the family business although that’s not exactly what he wanted. His oldest daughter, Anissa, was told to finish college first. And once she did she signed on as Thunder fighting with the Outsiders. Younger daughter Jennifer is now with the JSA. I’d love to see the three of them team-up someday when Thunder is out of her coma.

Colonel Jake Kane, dad of Kate Kane/Batwoman. Jake is a military man who raised his daughter after his wife and other daughter were murdered. When his daughter chose to leave the military, Jake, who had also served, stood by her. When she decided to fight crime, he designed her costume. And when she goes into the field, he is usually not far behind her. Truly, Colonel Kane has his daughter’s back.

Jim Gordon, dad of Barbara Gordon. Whenever these two interact you can see the love and respect they have for each other. Jim may or may not be Barbara’s biological father, and he wasn’t her father for the first few years of her life, but being a dad isn’t just about those things. It’s about being there when your daughter needs you supporting her in her endeavors and loving her for who she is no matter how surprising a revelation that may be.
Dinah on a date with Dr. Midnite. Now that the Ollie-Dinah marriage is over who would you pick as a kick ass romantic partner for Dinah?
