DC Women Kicking Ass

Thoughts, pictures, reviews and other stuff about the women in comics who kick ass. This is a feminist site. Deal with it.
"... just a dreadful little site that just basically compiles lists." - poster/DC Comics forum
"... provides a much-needed voice that is not often heard on traditional comic sites." - Wired's Geek Dad
... she's pretty amazingly ignorant of comics outside of the Batverse and some recent Wonder Woman, and seems pretty clueless about the way the industry works. That and she doesn't write that well at all." anonymous poster, Dreamwidth
" ... a phenomenal blog that's always up to date with female superhero news ..." -Nerdbastards.com

Mera - Aquaman’s Wife in the New 52, Until She Wasn’t!

Many folks including myself have questioned why characters such as Buddy and Ellen Baker and Aquaman and Mera are married in the new 52 when other characters such as Kate Kane and Maggie Sawyer in this week’s Marriagegate aren’t.

Today, just coincidentally, it was clarified at Baltimore Comic Con that Aquaman and Mera ARE NOT married in the new 52. Not just clarified, but apparently according to Bleeding Cool, confirmed by DC.

Which is interesting. Because it begs a few questions. One, how Mera is Arthur’s Queen if they are just shacking up?

And secondly, why Geoff Johns was fine with her being referred to as Arthur’s wife in the new 52 launch? Like here in Maxim.

You made Aquaman’s wife, Mera, a much more prominent character – how come?
For me, her background is really interesting. She felt very strong to me, her hydroconnect powers are very interesting - controlling the water is visually beautiful and I felt the character was very appealing. That’s why we introduced her in Blackest Night and had her stand on her own before we brought Aquaman in. You know, I think people respond to the character because she is such a strong, confident kickass superhero.

And third why the DC web site refers to her as his wife?

A princess of the underwater kingdom of Xebel who possesses enhanced strength, durability and the ability to bend water to her will, Mera trained since birth for her ultimate mission: to kill the current King of Atlantis in retaliation for her people’s exile. Mera knew that to do this, she’d have to gain Aquaman’s trust. It was the only way she could get close enough to kill him. But as she got to know Aquaman, something unexpected occurred—she fell in love. And thus began the fiery redhead’s constantly conflicted sense of being. To stand beside her husband is to betray her family and her people, but to give them what they want, to fulfill her mission, is something her heart would never allow her to do.

Although a hero in her own right, Mera often finds herself struggling between two worlds—whether it’s between her own people and her husband or between those of the surface and those of the sea. Her aggressive nature especially puts her at odds with the surface world, a world so much bigger and more complex than she was ever taught and with whom she finds it impossible to relate to and understand. It’s for her love of Aquaman that she even attempts to understand this world of man, and why she continues to try to be a part of both worlds while terrified of belonging to none.

Update: Here’s a fourth! The official Amazon verbiage from first collection of new 52 Aquaman:

A #1 New York Times Best Seller!

The King of the Seven Seas Aquaman returns to his very own ongoing series for the first time in years at the hands of DC Entertainment Chief Creative Office Geoff Johns, who reteams with GREEN LANTERN collaborator artist Ivan Reis! Between proving himself to a world that sees him as a joke, Aquaman and his bride Mera face off against a long buried terror from the depths of the ocean!

I mean they certainly acted like a married couple.

Oh well, it’s not like DC hasn’t rewritten their history before …

Justice League #4 // Jim Lee

Oh look it’s Aquaman on the cover of Justice League #4. And it looks like Bats has gone down by Trident. Wonder how the Bat forums are going to take that?
