DC Women Kicking Ass

Thoughts, pictures, reviews and other stuff about the women in comics who kick ass. This is a feminist site. Deal with it.
"... just a dreadful little site that just basically compiles lists." - poster/DC Comics forum
"... provides a much-needed voice that is not often heard on traditional comic sites." - Wired's Geek Dad
... she's pretty amazingly ignorant of comics outside of the Batverse and some recent Wonder Woman, and seems pretty clueless about the way the industry works. That and she doesn't write that well at all." anonymous poster, Dreamwidth
" ... a phenomenal blog that's always up to date with female superhero news ..."

There’s a New Team Joining Catwoman This Week And The Preview Looks Great

Like many of the female characters in DC Comics Catwoman came out the new 52 in worse shape than she went in. First we had the “sexy, sexy, sexy” run by Judd Winick and Guillem March. That was followed by Ann Nocenti’s run which was far from the best work she’s ever done. And now? This week novelist Genevieve Valentine joins the book along with artist Garry Brown and if the preview is any indication this will be the best team Selina has had in a very long time.

This arc spins out of Batman Eternal where Selina is moving into a new role - Crime Kingpin!

DC Comics Announces New Creator on Catwoman; Ups Female Creator Count Again

Three years ago this month DC Comics was being, rightfully, raked over the coals due to their lack of female creators in the launch of the new 52. The past week or so has DC expand the ranks of female writers to seven. Joining Gail Simone, Ann Nocenti and Amanda Conner and Marguerite Bennett who was previously announced as one of the co-writers on Earth 2: World’s End are Becky Cloonan, who was announced as the writer on the upcoming Gotham Academy, Meredith Finch, the new writer on Wonder Woman and today, novelist and i09 contributor Genevieve Valentine who will be taking over Catwoman in October (Nocenti is launching a new Klarion book). Here’s a look at the cover art by Jae Lee.

The book will focus on Catwoman reign as mob boss in Gotham.

The announcements are not over. Expect another one later this week that will bring a female artist to a familiar book.

Here’s Your “Gotham” Catwoman

Fox’s Gotham has released an “official” image of their 14 year old Selina Kyle as played by Camren Bicondova and here it is:

Perhaps, as this is set in the past, she is a Madonna fan? I do like the two buildings giving her “cats ears”

What do you think?

Batman Eternal Could be the Most Female Centric Bat-tale Since No Man’s Land

Fifteen years ago DC Comics turned over the Batbooks to a single event - the aftermath of an earthquake in Gotham City. The event was called “No Man’s Land” to reflect the ostracizing and abandonment of the city by the government and the majority of the city’s citizens. But the name also, probably inadvertently, reflected one of the most female centric female stories in the history of the Batbooks. And now, based on the teaser issue that arrived Wednesday, we may have a Bat-tale to rival it in Batman Eternal.

Who are the most popular Superheroes on Social Media?
A company named Synthesio who monitors social media has released the infographic above. Interesting Jean Grey mentioned more than Wolverine. Or Wonder Woman. Very interesting. I wonder how much monitoriing they did of Tumblr? Because if they did Loki should be here.

Batman 66 Introduces Batgirl and Look Who She is Battling

As some of you may know, my entrance into comics was through the Batman TV show and led to my life long love of one character - Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl.

Tomorrow Batman 66,the comic set in the television world, debuts their Batgirl and, bonus, the artwork is by Colleen Coover.

Here’s a look.

Remember, Yvonne Craig was a brunette as Barbara Gordon.

Batgirla and Eartha Kitt Catwoman? This could definitely be one of my favorite comics of this year.

The Cat(woman)’s Pajamas - Yes, You Can Now Go To Bed As Catwoman

There has been plenty of superhero nightwear for ladies that let you channel your inner Wonder Woman, Batgirl or Supergirl. But what about someone who wants to channel DC’s favorite “kinda bad/kinda good” lady - Selina Kyle?

Lucky you, your day (or in this case, night) has come.

Now available from the Spencer’s Gifts.

The set (sadly not a one piece ala Catwoman’s - although better for middle of the night bathroom runs and visits from the Caped Crusader for rooftop nookie).

DC Comics by Underboss : You’ll feel like a superhero in this Cat Woman sleep set. Made of a spandex and cotton blend, this is a soft and comfortable way to spend your night and cozy up. Set includes a sleek long sleeve top and elastic-band sleep pants.

And to truly channel the comics, the pajamas have the zipper partially unzipped and a wasp thin waist as seen from the pencil of artist’s like Jim Balent and Guillem March. This line is called “anatomical” - I assume to refer to the built-in waist line.

Also available are Wonder Woman and Batgirl in similar styles.

Classic Album Covers Redone DC Women Style

Creating album covers for superheroes isn’t a new idea - Cliff Chiang has been doing it for years - see Cliff Chiang’s mash up of Purple Rain and Batgirl.

But recently Artist Robert Jimenez created one of a kind art pieces by taking old album covers from the 50s and 60s and 70s and tweaking them to include some of the women of DC Comics. All the covers are sold now but here’s a look. If you’re arty you can probably hit a garage sale this weekend and try it yourself.

The Original Cast Album for “Red Head” (which just missed the 60s) starring Gwen Verdon (who today is known to many as the woman from whom Beyonce borrowed her “Single Lady” dance moves) has been changed into something starring Selina Kyle.

New Statue Pays Tribute To Hush Bat/Cat

The new 52 has eradicated the popular Batman arc “Hush” by Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee from continuity but that doesn’t mean that DC will ignore it. This month the company solicted a new statue based on a memorable kiss between Batman and Catwoman from the series.

Here’s the moment in comics

Hush is a divisive series - there are those who absolutely hate and those that adore it. It remains one of the most popular Batman arcs ever due to both Lee’s art and the all-star cast. I have mixed feelings on Hush but given the appearances of both Oracle and Helena Bertinelli (albeit wit the first appearance of the belly window) I’m increasingly happy to have it around. (You can order a copy here.)

And there is not question that that Bat/Cat kiss is hot.

Let’s be glad they don’t have a statue celebrating that last page of Catwoman #1.

Julie Newmar Catwoman Barbie Doll Now Available

DC and Warner Bros. are going all in on retro Batman. The first floppy of the digital comic was out this week and my LCS owner was smiling ear to ear about sales.

There is also merchandise including this Barbie Catwoman Julie Newmar doll (there’s a Ken as Batman available, too.)

You can order it here.

That Didn’t Take Long! Catwoman Joins Batman 66

How many of you downloaded the first chapter of Batman 66 last week? Kelly and I will be reviewing the first issue on “3 Chicks Review Comics” which should post later today.

TV Guide just posted the preview of the next chapter and I’m please to see Catwoman showing up already.

One of things I’m excited about is that there will, as in the show, more than one look for Catwoman so we’ll get both Julie Newmar and Eartha Kitt. PURR-FECT!

The musical team-up chairs continue in Batman and this time the winner is Catwoman! And lucky us we get probably the best cover she’s had since the new 52 began.
