DC Women Kicking Ass

Thoughts, pictures, reviews and other stuff about the women in comics who kick ass. This is a feminist site. Deal with it.
"... just a dreadful little site that just basically compiles lists." - poster/DC Comics forum
"... provides a much-needed voice that is not often heard on traditional comic sites." - Wired's Geek Dad
... she's pretty amazingly ignorant of comics outside of the Batverse and some recent Wonder Woman, and seems pretty clueless about the way the industry works. That and she doesn't write that well at all." anonymous poster, Dreamwidth

Whoops, did Cartoon Network let Artemis’ identity slip?

One of the biggest questions about the upcoming Young Justice show has been exactly who the character of Artemis is. Given that she’s a archer first speculation had that she was a renamed Arrowette aka Cissie King or Mia Dearden. The creators, Brenda Vietti and Greg Weisman, however said that she wasn’t either character but an “obscure existing character from DC history.” And they “didn’t make her up.” The guessing has been going on since the show was first confirmed but did Cartoon Network mistakenly identify Artemis this week?

Earlier this week Cartoon Network issued the following news release:

“In Young Justice, being a teenager means proving yourself over and over – to peers, parents, teachers, mentors and, ultimately, to yourself. But what if you’re not just a normal teenager? What if you’re a teenage super hero? Are you ready to join the ranks of the great heroes and prove you’re worthy of the Justice League? That’s exactly what the members of Young Justice — Robin (aka Dick Grayson), Aqualad (aka Kaldur'ahm), Kid Flash (aka Wally West), Superboy (aka Conner Kent), Miss Martian (aka M'gann M'orzz) and Artemis (aka Cissie King) — will find out, whether they have what it takes to be a proven hero.”

What’s interesting is that the reference ot Cissie King is now being referred to as a “mistake” and has been redacted.

So was it a mistake? Could be. I’ve worked on press releases many times and every so often a mistake slips through. But usually there’s a mistake because of a reason like confusion.

Speculation has focused on the character being Artemis Crock the daughter of Silver Age villains Paula Brooks, the first Huntress, and Sportsmaster. That was my guess as she has the name, the skills and she’s obscure. But not so obscure. Here she is in a recent Batman: Brave and the Bold episode on vacation with her parents.

Artemis was last seen as a villain using the name “Tigress”. But that just requires a ret-con to her past, which comics does all the time.

But after this slip, I’m going with speculation Artemis is Bonnie King, Cissie’s mom. She’s a fairly obscure character in continuity having appeared in Green Arrow during the early 60s and only emerging again in comics again in the 90s as Cissie’s stage mom. The mistake makes sense since they have the same last names and are related.

What do you think?
